Lady Well Day

August the15th the 'Feast of the Assumption' was always a day of festival in Slane because it was lucky to have a holy well located in the castle grounds to which people gathered in their droves to per take of the healing powers associated with its miraculous waters and to delight in the rare midsummer holiday spent with family & friends.  To have a day free from the daily grind of labouring in the fields especially at harvest time was a day to celebrate. Many of the locals from Slane and of its neighbouring parishes have fond memories of those days.

One of the consequences of our rush to embrace modernity  has been the decline and in many cases a complete loss of such gatherings.  It has been the goal of the Parish Pastoral Council in Slane to re establish this ancient & nobel tradition. To that end the Pastoral Council tapped into the generosity of the people of Slane & together we have re established the annual gathering at our Lady's well with a procession led by Fr Richard Matthews to the well after the vigil mass of the feast of the Assumption on Thursday evening.

With the kind permission of  Alex Cunningham Marquess of Slane and his staff we have been able to access the well during the day.  It was a very successful gathering this year, with many people travelling from near and far.  Many thanks on behalf of the Parish Pastoral Council to all who made it possible.

We  look forward to next year and building on the success of 2025. to create  happy memories for generations yet to come.

Many thanks to all who visited the well this year.

Tara to Slane pilgrim walk – Bealach an tSolais – 30th August 2025 the annual pilgrim walk from the Hill of Tara to the Hill of Slane will take place on Saturday 30th August. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the first pilgrimage for the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000. Tara is associated with our pre-Christian history while Slane, according to tradition, is the site where St. Patrick lit the Paschal Fire for the first time in Ireland. The walk is therefore a journey towards the Light of Christ, the source of hope on our pilgrim journey through life. The walk is 15 miles (24 kms) long and winds along country roads through Skryne, Walterstown, & Beauparc, before crossing the Boyne at Slane.  For information and registration, contact Navan Parish Office at 046-9027518 or office@navanparish.ie
