The True Story of the Horrid Popish Plot by the playwright Desmond Forristal. For the St Oliver Plunkett 400th Anniversary of his birth (1625-2025) and the 50th Anniversary of his canonisation in Rome (1975-2025), members of Drogheda's local drama groups and local musicians come together to give a rehearsed reading and performance of Desmond Forristal's celebrated play, of the 1972 Dublin Theatre Festival, The True Story of the Horrid Popish Plot. Forristal presents the complex story of Oliver Plunkett’s trial and execution and the political machinations surrounding them in an accessible way. The production is co-produced and directed by Niall O'Brien, actor and Michael Holohan, composer and member of Aosdána. Incidental music for string quartet will accompany the play. This rehearsed reading takes place in the Augustinian Church in Shop St. at 7.30 pm on Culture Night 19th September 2025. The site of the church, house and its car parks in Bachelor's Lane was the home for St Oliver Plunkett's first integrated school for Catholic and Protestant boys 1670-1673. St Oliver also founded a small seminary for 50 student priests on the site. Both institutions were run by the Jesuit order at the request of St. Oliver.
